It got approved by the city. (with the help of our attendant Steve) However, they do not have budget for table tennis as usual. I am working on the deal to have two more tables. [announcement] 08/7/2004

  1. Our first try on the clinic went well. We had two sessions of four players each. (Suathua, Tetsuro, Percy, Kevin, Aldo, Jane, Manin, and Paul) After the clinic, coach Jim and I discussed a little bit about how the clinic can be more effective so that players may get the most out of the clinic. He felt that four people in a session were too many. Therefore, he recommended that we have two players in a session in the future. In addition, we will also try to group people of similar level in the same session. There will be three one-hour sessions per week. We can only accommodate 6 people per week. The recommended donation will be $10 per session per person. If you are interested, please send an email to me. (bay_tt@yahoo.com) I will keep a signup list. First-time players will have the higher priority. Here is the schedule for the three sessions:

    First session: 2:15 - 3:15

    • For complete detailed results, visit http://www.concordtabletennis.com.

  3. We have 9 tables now. We've returned two rental Andro's to Palo Alto and moved two Joola's to Gary's storage and replaced them with 5 brand new Butterfly Centrofold 25 Sky tables. Hopefully, this will at least ease the crowdedness a little bit.

  4. For convenience, we will re-arrange and label the tables by numbers starting next week. Table 1, 2, and 3 will be used as round robin tables. 4 will be doubles table. 5 will be practice tables. 6, 7, 8, and 9 will be for open play.

  5. Please read the label on the new tables when setting them up. Two people are required to set up the table for safety sake.

[announcement] 6/25/2004

1. Bruce Liu and Gary Alcares both won their round robin groups undefeated.
2. Financial status:
incomes:
$20 from Peter Tsang's wife Elisa Tsang
$15 from ball sales (Ron $6, Hermann $3, Frank $3, Hsu $3)
$30 from round robins (10 players)

expenses:
$8.5 for balls

The balance is $267.65.
3. We need volunteers on one of the Fridays in July for our new tables. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks.

4. Three players from Concord club will visit us on 7/10. They will play with our players Stanley Sun, Mark Johnson, and Peter Tsang. Our club beat them last time in Concord by a very small margin. It is gonna be a tough fight.

We will arrange inter-club competition for different levels in the future. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. They will use two tables on 7/10. There will be no round robin that day. (Open play still available)

[announcement]6/12/2004

1. Dennis Ong and Gary Fang were both undefeated and won their respective round robin.

2. We now accept reservation for the weekly round robin. Please send me email if you want to participate. This can speed up the process and hopefully get more entrants. Please remember that the round robin will start at 2:30.

3. There is tournament this coming Saturday. (6/17/2004) Quite a few players will be there. Therefore, I don't think MSC will be very crowded. Please come. We need at least 30 people to cover the rent.

4. Financial updates:
Incomes:

$9 for 3 boxes of balls by Ron Wallace
$70 for 5 t-shirts
$36 round robin fee
* There could be a box or two ball sales but I lost the piece of paper that I wrote down all transactions on Saturday. Please let me know if I missed anything.
Expenses:

$10.2 cost of balls
$1710 paid for two butterfly tables

So, we have only $211.15 in the fund. We still have some short-term expenses such as renting a truck to get the new tables and to return the two Andro tables to Palo Alto. Oh, yeah! We only paid one-month rent for the two tables. Will need to pay for the second and third month. ($30 per month)

5. Please check out the new contributor list page. If you have business want to promote, you are welcome to do so. Also, I think we can use some non-cash contribution as our round robin prize, if you have any idea or connection, please let me know. Of course, cash donation is always welcome as well.:-)

[announcement]6/5/2004

1. We cancelled our round robin for two weeks now because we did not have enough people show up by 2:30 PM. Please come early if you intend to participate in the round robin. It is fun. You get to play with players of your level. Oh, yeah, by the way, we need the money to pay the rent of the tables as well as buy new tables.
2. Financial updates:
Incomes:

$10 for 3 boxes of balls by Ron Wallace
$2 contribution by Ron Wallace for his book sale
$40 contribution by Mozhi Yu
$9 for 3 boxes of balls by Paul Chang
$30 contribution by Simon Ng
$10 contribution by Peter Tsang
$780.25 for 55 t-shirts

Expenses:
$10.2 cost of balls
$505.74 cost of 60 t-shirt (five haven't been picked up and paid yet)

The balance for our new table fund is $1816.35. (as of 6/5/2004) We will spend $1710 + shipping for two new tables soon which will probably use all the money we have. As I said before, Gary Alcares will buy three tables to replace the two Joola tables. So we will have one extra table to use once those tables arrive. He will let us use his 7 tables until mid 2006. When the time comes, we have to come up with money to buy our own tables. Thanks to all who contributed. However, we need more money in the future. Don't be shy to talk to me!:-)

Lost and Found

Anybody lost a sweat shirt? It has been in the net set box for a few weeks. Here is the picture of the shirt.

Golden State Open

Milpitas Sports Center strikes again!

  1. First Place: U2800 doubles Carrie Huang/Mark Johnson (two years in a row)

  2. First Place: U3400 doubles Vincent Tai/Tom Li

  3. Second Place: U2000 Ming Zhang (winner of U1850 last year)

  4. Semi-final: U2300 doubles Pat Castro/Mark Johnson

  5. Semi-final: Open Doubles Ming Zhang/Bruce H. Liu (Upset two higher rated teams, 150 and 900 points, respectively)

  6. Semi-final: U2000 Bruce H. Liu

  7. Quarter-final: U1850 Stanley Sun

  8. Quarter-final: U1700 Mark Johnson

I think Ming is the tournament MVP for Milpitas Sports Center. He got a game from a 2500 player. He had an awesome final with an obvious sandbagger in the final of U2000. I think the person also made the semi-final in U2350. Photos are coming up soon!

[Announcement] 5/27/2004

1. We will open this Saturday. You must have been itchy to play since we closed last week. Quite a few people will play in Golden State Open. So, I don't think it will be crowded. (Remember, we need 30 people to pay for the rent.)
2. Some of you have not picked up your T-shirts. Lisa will have them one Saturday.
3. Gary negotiated a great deal for Butterfly tables. (Centrefold 25 Sky Rollaway, retail price $1499.99) We will purchase 2 from our fund to replace the two rentals from Palo Alto club and Gary will buy three, using his own money, to replace the two Joola tables. Let's give a round of applause to Gary. He's da man. I can't tell you how much it is here because it could cause troubles to the vendor. If you are interested, just ask me privately. It is a brand new model in the US and we will most likely be one of the first clubs in the US to use them. (It will be used in the ITTF Pro Tour in Chicago in July.) Oh, yeah! Did I mention we are gonna buy brand new tables instead of used ones?

[Announcement] 5/15/2004

1. NO table tennis on 5/22 due to a junior basketball tournament. Will resume on 5/29/2004.

2. Barry Or won the weekly round robin without dropping a game!

3. Financial status
Incomes:

  • 6 people round robin: $18

  • Bruce Liu, that's me:-), donated his first place prize $20 from the Hardbat tournament in Sacramento on 5/15/2004.
  • $12 from the tips for t-shirts. (44 t-shirts have been picked up. Some players did not show up on Sunday. Once all t-shirts have been picked up, I will post the result. We probably will make close to $300 towards the new MSC fund.)

Expenses:

  • one box of balls. ($1.7)

So, as of 5/15/2004, we have $1451.04 for new tables.

4. I've cancel the order of two Andro tables from California Table Tennis Company because they kept putting off the delivery day and could not give us a firm date. Gary Alcares is negotiating with Butterfly for their tables. Will keep you posted when I have more information.

More on the Inter-Club Competition

It could not get any closer. After all 12 matches were played,
as Surya said, it was tied at 6:6 in match count and 24:24 in
game count. So it came down to points. Two people count the
points independently. Guess what? One results showed Milpitas
won while the other said otherwise! Therefore, a recount was
commenced and it turned out Milpitas won by six points! (450:444)

/Bruce

Inter-club Competition (Milpitas vs. Concord on 5/9/2004)

Congratulations to Peter, Stanley and Mark who represented Milpitas in the inter-club competition. Thanks to Surya at Concord club organized a great event and graciously posted the results. I think the rivalry is on. They will come to Milpitas for their revenge soon. We will need players to step up to defend Milpitas. (More rating divisions and date will be announced later.)

Also, thanks to our three players who kindly donated their prize to the new-table fund. ($30)

/Bruce
