Golden State Open

Milpitas Sports Center strikes again!

  1. First Place: U2800 doubles Carrie Huang/Mark Johnson (two years in a row)

  2. First Place: U3400 doubles Vincent Tai/Tom Li

  3. Second Place: U2000 Ming Zhang (winner of U1850 last year)

  4. Semi-final: U2300 doubles Pat Castro/Mark Johnson

  5. Semi-final: Open Doubles Ming Zhang/Bruce H. Liu (Upset two higher rated teams, 150 and 900 points, respectively)

  6. Semi-final: U2000 Bruce H. Liu

  7. Quarter-final: U1850 Stanley Sun

  8. Quarter-final: U1700 Mark Johnson

I think Ming is the tournament MVP for Milpitas Sports Center. He got a game from a 2500 player. He had an awesome final with an obvious sandbagger in the final of U2000. I think the person also made the semi-final in U2350. Photos are coming up soon!

[Announcement] 5/27/2004

1. We will open this Saturday. You must have been itchy to play since we closed last week. Quite a few people will play in Golden State Open. So, I don't think it will be crowded. (Remember, we need 30 people to pay for the rent.)
2. Some of you have not picked up your T-shirts. Lisa will have them one Saturday.
3. Gary negotiated a great deal for Butterfly tables. (Centrefold 25 Sky Rollaway, retail price $1499.99) We will purchase 2 from our fund to replace the two rentals from Palo Alto club and Gary will buy three, using his own money, to replace the two Joola tables. Let's give a round of applause to Gary. He's da man. I can't tell you how much it is here because it could cause troubles to the vendor. If you are interested, just ask me privately. It is a brand new model in the US and we will most likely be one of the first clubs in the US to use them. (It will be used in the ITTF Pro Tour in Chicago in July.) Oh, yeah! Did I mention we are gonna buy brand new tables instead of used ones?

[Announcement] 5/15/2004

1. NO table tennis on 5/22 due to a junior basketball tournament. Will resume on 5/29/2004.

2. Barry Or won the weekly round robin without dropping a game!

3. Financial status
Incomes:

  • 6 people round robin: $18
  • Mark Johnson,Stanley Sun, and Peter Tsang donated their prize $30 from the inter-club tournament.
  • Bruce Liu, that's me:-), donated his first place prize $20 from the Hardbat tournament in Sacramento on 5/15/2004.
  • $12 from the tips for t-shirts. (44 t-shirts have been picked up. Some players did not show up on Sunday. Once all t-shirts have been picked up, I will post the result. We probably will make close to $300 towards the new MSC fund.)

Expenses:

  • one box of balls. ($1.7)

So, as of 5/15/2004, we have $1451.04 for new tables.

4. I've cancel the order of two Andro tables from California Table Tennis Company because they kept putting off the delivery day and could not give us a firm date. Gary Alcares is negotiating with Butterfly for their tables. Will keep you posted when I have more information.

More on the Inter-Club Competition

It could not get any closer. After all 12 matches were played,
as Surya said, it was tied at 6:6 in match count and 24:24 in
game count. So it came down to points. Two people count the
points independently. Guess what? One results showed Milpitas
won while the other said otherwise! Therefore, a recount was
commenced and it turned out Milpitas won by six points! (450:444)

Inter-club Competition (Milpitas vs. Concord on 5/9/2004)

Congratulations to Peter, Stanley and Mark who represented Milpitas in the inter-club competition. Thanks to Surya at Concord club organized a great event and graciously posted the results. I think the rivalry is on. They will come to Milpitas for their revenge soon. We will need players to step up to defend Milpitas. (More rating divisions and date will be announced later.)

Also, thanks to our three players who kindly donated their prize to the new-table fund. ($30)

/Bruce
