Players at Milpitas Sports Center

I must have missed quite a few. Here they are anyway: (over 300 photos)

Barry Or at the Nationals

Barry Or made to the quarter-final with Mark Johnson in the U3700 Doubles. He also advanced from quite a few rating events. However, the most difficult match he played was probably against the USATT Magazine editor Larry Hodges in a wagered side match - whoever lost would donate $20 to the junior program. It was a 2 out of 3 to 11 match. The catch was that Larry would use a clipboard. You heard me right. It was a unmodified 9x12 wood clipboard available at any Office Depot. Should have been a walk in the park for Barry, right? Barry ended up lost 2 straight games! Some minor details I forgot to tell Barry was that Larry constantly beat players under 2000 using the clipboard. The rumor is that he used to play table tennis with a shoe.

Sorry, Barry! It is all for the sport.

Jim Chai and Bruce Liu at the Nationals

There is really nothing to write home about. Both Jim and I couldn't focus on our matches in Vegas for some reason. (No, Jim is not in the photo.)

Wayne Lo at the Nationals

Wayne Lo had a fantastic tournament. He participated in the Paralympics events at the US Nationals. Congratulations to him. He will play our RR free till then end of 2007. Here is his result:

  • Men's Standing Open: 4th place
  • Men's Singles Class 8: 1st place
  • Men's Class 8-9 (Team event): 2nd place

  • Congratulations to all winners. 5078 matches have been played since the League started in 2003.

    $25: 12/12 and 12/19 clinics
    Expense:

    Balance: $6,887.28

Claire at the Nationals

Claire Yeh (next to Mark Johnson) did not win any event at the Nationals. However, with a rating of 423, she managed to beat three 900 players and one 700 player. I heard Jim Chai (the rightmost one) helped her during the matches but I don't think it had anything to do with her winning.:-)

I believe Claire's rating will have a very big boost, if not the biggest, after the Nationals.

Ariel at the Nationals

In addition to Dave Hanson, we actually have another multiple event winners!

  • U21 Women's Singles: Ariel is only 11 and made the quarter-final.
  • U2300 - Lost in the quarter-final to the event winner Dave Rosensweig.
  • Girls' Primary School Singles (13&U): 1st place
  • Cadet Girls: 1st place

Dave Hanson at the Nationals

Here is the 10-year-old who put Dave Hanson on the rope in their under 1400 match. Dave barely squeezed by by winning the match in 5 games. (trailing 2:8 in the fifth) Dave then breezed through the rest of the matches in the event and cruised to win the U1500 on his boosted confidence.:-)

Stefan and Khoa at MSC (12/9/2006)

It was a great treat, wasn't it? Who could have thought our players, Voltaire and Ming, could beat Stefan and Khoa?:-) Well, even with the spot it wasn't easy. Job well done.
Here are photos taken by Dan Lin. (http://www.milpitas-tabletennis.com/events/Stefan_Khoa_12092006/)

USATT Election

I am pleased to know that my fellow alumnus Santos Shih is running for USATT treasurer. (Michael Hsing, aka Ariel's father, also went to the same school. However, they were both older than I was and still are.:-)) In addition, Santos and I both played in the school team!

USATT just lost the majority of its funding from the United States Olympic Committee. We, members, definitely need a strong leader in finance. I think Santos is the man not just because we are alumni but also his tracking record in both table tennis and business. In case you don't know yet, he personally contributed US $20,000 to USATT for junior program.

Some of you probably already received the ballot from USATT for the election. Please do not toss it! Your vote counts! All candidates' campaign statements are available here.

By the way, in case you are curious, we went to the Affiliated Senior High School of Taiwan Normal University. (師大附中)

A Star is Born

Who is this guy? Doesn't seem to have solid fundamental in table tennis at all! Occasionally won our weekly round robin for table 4. Guess what? With a USATT rating of 1303, he won U1550 and U1700 events in the 4-star tournament at Stanford on 10/21. Moreover, he could have won 3 events. He got defaulted in the U1400 event because he forgot the schedule. Yeah, he was there but forgot to report to the control desk!

Nah, it could have been a fluke - one would think. (Well, I have to confess that I thought so.) To my surprise, in the following week, 10/28, in Sacramento, Qingmin lead his team to win the U4200 team event. Again, it was a team event. Maybe he just joined the right team with the right teammates.

Last night, 10/31, the Halloween night, he showed up at MSC with his racket and beat Superman and Patrick Wu - both 3:0! (Refer to my previous post about Patrick winning the U6000 team event and the most noticeable player of the tournament.) Darn! I've been trying to beat Superman and Patrick without much success and Q beat them in one night! Wow! It must have been the evil spirits in the Halloween night!

10/28/2006 - Sacramento Tournament

  • U1900 - 1st Mark Johnson

  • Mark Johson upset U2200 group B runner-up Sally Su again! (He did that in Stanford last week.)
  • Patrick Wu was da man! His fighting spirit and creativity impressed everyone in the playing hall. I believe he was the most noticeable player in the tournament.

  • Milpitas Team won the 3rd place in the Chinese Table Tennis tournament on 7/15!
    • In the 3rd/4th team match against Lawton TT club from San Francisco, Sean Lee (2314) upset Wu Weiyang (2398) 3:1. Sean played brilliantly like a champion! He was down 2 game points in the second game but dueced it and won the game. I think 3 games went to deuce.
    • Henry Sit (1971) also held his ground after floundering 10 match points in the fourth game against Sally Su (2116) and won the game at 15:13! Yeah, you hear me right, 10 match points!:-)
    • Ming Zhang (2199)/Bruce Liu (2033) put up a good fight but fell short to pull another good upset against Wu Weiyang (2398)/Thomas Yeh (2070) and lost in the fifth.
    • Sean/Terry then beat Wayne Kuang/Sally Su in the deciding doubles to secure the win. They came back from down 2 game points to win the match!

MSCTT'ers in the Reno US Open Team Championships

I remember someone exclaimed in disbelief on MSCTT'ers great performance at the Berkeley Tournament a couple of weekend ago and questioned how we could top that.

The Four Musketeers (MSCTT'ers) did it! Mark Johnson, Barry Or, Michael Liu, and Gary Fang made the final in Division 2 in the US Open Team Championships only after the USATT Junior Girls! (Atha Fong(2051), Judy Hugh(2373), Barbara Wei(2104), Stephanie Shih(2025)) The combined ratings of the top 3 players in each team were 5476 and 6528, respectively! I think they deserve a parade.

I was busy cheering for my team. I am sure Mark Johnson will have more info for his team to share with us. Mark, we are all ears!

The second team (Michael Sung, Wei-Sung Tsao, Jim Chai, and Bruce Liu) did not win any trophy in Division 1. However, they can proudly boast that they played 3 teams who made the quarter-final. They were defeated but with their heads up. Here are the top 3 teams they played:

          • Canada 2006: Pradeeban Peter-Paul(2640), Qiang Shen(2589), and Pierre-Luc Hinse(2539). They lost to Canada 2008 in the final.
          • California J Leaguers: Takayuki Abe(2500), Sario Mihara(2444), Tatsuya Honda(2295), and Sugura M. Araki(2127). They lost to the eventual winner Canada 2008 in the quarter-final.
          • Jennifer Durst: Yu Shao(2507), De Tran(2463), and Paul David(2459). They beat current world number 7 Gao Jun's team in the 2nd RR to advance to the quarter-final and was stopped by ChengDu team. Guo Xi who played in MSC a few weeks ago was in the ChengDu team.

Sara Fu who played MSC's 2/14 RR did very well in the tournament, too. I think she might have been undefeated throughout the tournament. I believe she may have a chance to break 2450 after the tournament

Guo Xi, who won the 2/24 RR, beat former Indian National member Chetan Baboor(2626) in the 2nd RR. Chetan Baboor was number 70 in the world. He also got a game from current world number 138 Wilson Zhang(2705) whose team won the tournament eventually.

Ariel Hsing, Winston Chen, and Patrick Wu were also in the tournament. I was too occupied to see their matches. Will update once I have the results.

We ate moderately - three buffets only. Oops! Should have been four, Atlantis, Silver Legacy, Harrah's, and Eldorado.

          2/18/2006

          • Hermann Luechinger, player/contributer of MSC, had an operation for his bladder cancer last Wednesday. He is expecting a full recovery. He was very pleased to receive our get-well card and flowers and would like to thank you all.
